“The plants and the earth are resting. Maybe we should too. The long days will be here soon enough.” -Rebecca Raiden
In the northern hemisphere, we are deep in the throes of the winter season. When we look at nature, we see that many plants are dormant, animals are hibernating, and the rains and winds reign. During this season, it may be beneficial for humans to replicate nature and allow time to slow down. Research from the University of Colorado suggests that humans have the necessary traits to hibernate and that indulging in more winter rest may be correlated with longevity, a decrease in diseases like Alzheimer’s, and less chance of heart attack. Even mammals who do not hibernate utilize times of rest when resources are low, and the weather is cold.
Stay home, catch up on reading or crafting, visit with loved ones, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You have worked hard all year, and now is the time to enjoy the resources you have harvested. Do not fight the early sunsets; follow the sun to an earlier bedtime or simply as a guide to more resting. Winter is an excellent time to be in gentle contemplation and store your energy for the coming year. Resting and regenerating is self-care! Remember, spring is the time for clean-up, organization, and expelling dense or stagnant energy, to enliven the quickening of spring; we aren’t there yet!
